![]() To celebrate World Toilet Day and bring light to global sanitation challenges, the Global Poverty Project will be joining the CWWA to launch an upcoming Canadian campaign towards making universal sanitation a reality by 2030. Thanks to the amazing progress in wastewater management in Canada, we are able to live in a country where we may sometimes take for granted access to a toilet and clean water. But 2.5 billion people around the world currently live without access to improved sanitation facilities. ![]() Please take a minute or two to learn more about the global issues and the activities being coordinated for World Toilet Day. Or, help raise awareness and show your love for toilets by sending an e-card like this one from Water for People. ![]() For a small company in western Canada, like Ramtech, attracting good talent can be a difficult, long and time-consuming process. We compete with oil and gas companies, a booming construction industry and all of the associated service jobs that go with them. Last year, Statistics Canada reported that almost 87 % of all new jobs in Canada were created in Alberta, largely in high-profile areas of mining, oil, gas and construction. This is great news except that it makes it challenging for the other lil' guys. Luckily for us, the field of water and wastewater treatment is diverse, rewarding and ever increasing in scope. Generally those involved take pride in what they do and their responsibilities towards the general public and the environment. Because the requirement to treat water and wastewater will never go away, and in all likelihood, will become increasingly necessary and important, considering a life-long career related to water seems like a rewarding no-brainer. So what are you waiting for. Take the plunge and consider a career in water and wastewater treatment! Because Ramtech is a small company, we can adopt waste diversion tactics that larger businesses would never be able to entertain. One of those is processing and recycling our K-Cups. Admittedly this takes commitment and unfortunately doesn't eliminate all the waste created by our convenient coffee maker. The outer cup of most K-Cups is #7 plastic (other or mixed) and this can't be recycled. However these little waste reducing measures add up and as the coffee grinds are good for the compost, we continue. With our K-Cups, we recycle the foil lid and soft plastic screen/filter (if present), and compost the grinds and paper filter. Until there's a more environmentally responsible and commonly available material, the outer cup (#7 plastic) is tossed in the garbage. |
